Wil Mathijs was born in 1977 in the wavy and glooming fruit plantations of Belgium. He studied at the Film Academy, Sint Lukas in Brussels & SHIVKV Genk. In 1998 he shot his first official shortfilm « AQUAREL ». He worked 13 years as a freelance (line)producer and production manager on documentary and tvfilm projects, corporates, commercials, shorts and tvshows for several national and international companies and television channels such as BBC, RTBF, France 2, TF1, TV5, ZDF, SRG, ARTE, CANVAS, VPRO, VTM, VT4 and the internet. After all these years he has rejoyced his filmmaking destiny as director.
In the beginning of 2011 he founded ELEMENTRIK FILMS. « CELLS », his first feature documentary, just had its artist & crew avant-premiere in Ghent in December 2013 and will have its theatrical release in 2014 and is currently on its international festival tour. « THE SHELTER » is his second documentary ready for postproduction. He also produces Inti Calfat’s shortfilm « VICTOR’s FLIGHT » written by Johan Verschueren (Oscar Nominee « Fait d’Hiver » 2003). ELEMENTRIK FILMS just finished the short animation film « BRING US THE KEY » by director Boris Sverlow (Animation VAF Wild Card Winner 2011), which was selected among 11 other short animations about Peace for the remembrance of WWI from 71 entries by The Flanders Audiovisual Fund, Canvas, Kinepolis KFD and The Flemish Fund for Literature.
It’s so much fun for Wil to shoot all this stuff, but the search for the personal essence, the intrinsic nature, exists and remains. Wil’s production box, ELEMENTRIK FILMS focuses on non-fiction, fiction, animation and experimental films made from a particular personal perspective mostly driven by social (sur)realism, contemplation, nature and art with universal relevance.
