In view of the tensions between Russia and the West, the importance of the so-called "frozen conflicts" in the turbulent Caucasus is increasing. How is daily life in the rebellious Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which have been de facto independent since the collapse of the Soviet Union? Lucas Destrijcker searched it out.

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Georgia is struggling with the renegade regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Twenty-five years  and a few wars later, there seems to be no return to reconciliation, let alone reintegration of the territories and unification of Georgia. Moreover, the frozen conflicts have a strong impact on the world stage. Where does it go wrong and why is so hard to find a solution?
