Maria Groot (1983) is a freelance journalist. Her work has appeared in publications such as Slate (USA) De Groene Amsterdammer (NL), Courrier International (FR) and De Standaard (BE).

She researched slavery in Mauritania and human trafficking from northern Europe to England.  Maria Groot holds a bachelor's degree in Journalism and Fine Arts and a postgraduate degree in International Research Journalism.
