BRUSSELS - IRPI has been awarded the Honorary Title for Freedom of Expression as part of Difference Day 2025, organized by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), under the patronage of UNESCO.
This recognition honors IRPI's ongoing commitment to investigative journalism and the defense of press freedom — especially when carried out under pressure, in high-risk contexts, and in defiance of attempts at censorship.
Alongside exiled Rwandan journalist Charles Kabonero, IRPI — and their online publication IrpiMedia — was recognized for their cross-border investigations exposing corruption, organized crime, and abuses of power. The universities emphasize their role in shedding light on complex transnational issues that many would rather see hidden. The jury considers both Kabonero’s and IRPI’s work powerful symbols in the fight against repression and disinformation.
“We are convinced that the Investigative Reporting Project Italy recognizes the importance of transparent communication and freedom of expression for the common good, by creating content that is independent and fact-based to inform the public. Therefore, we would like to award Investigative Reporting Project Italy the Difference Day Honorary Title 2025 as a tribute to your continuous drive to inform people truthfully in very dangerous circumstances.”
— Prof. Dr. Jan Danckaert (Rector of VUB) and Prof. Dr. Annemie Schaus (Rector of ULB)
Difference Day is an annual event in Brussels that celebrates World Press Freedom Day, proclaimed by the UN in 1993. Since 2015, VUB, ULB, IHECS, Erasmushogeschool Brussel, BOZAR, and the Evens Foundation — in partnership with leading media and academic organizations and also Journalismfund Europe — have brought together institutions and citizens to celebrate the right to speak freely and to listen respectfully.
This year marks the 11th edition, taking place on May 2nd, 2025 at BOZAR – The Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels. The event includes debates, exhibitions, film screenings, and media literacy sessions. All held under the motto: “Speak freely, listen respectfully – different opinions matter.”
