LOS ANGELES - Left Behind, Marijn Fidder's photo documentary project about the children left behind by economic migrants from Romania and Moldova, has received an International Photography Award in the category “Professional Editorial / Press, Contemporary Issues”.

She receives the award after previously winning a Zilveren Camera and a Second Prize for Documentary Photography at the Sarajevo Photography Festival earlier this month for Left Behind.

Jury member Michael Zajakowski commends the focus on the underreported consequences of European migration and its impact on children.

"This photo essay shows an underreported consequence of European migration and its impact on children. The story makes you wonder about the fate of these children and how they will process their abandonment as adults. The photographs show the children (and grandparents) trying to make the best of the situation, but there is an undeniable sadness in their faces."
