Volksrepubliek van verlangen

BEIJING - China is everywhere. Yet we know little or nothing about the country and its people. What we mainly notice is that there are more and more Chinese people around. Today, there are around 1.3 billion of them. They are people with dreams, aspirations and hopes. Lots of hopes. This book is about ordinary Chinese people. The similarities between them and us Westerners are greater than the differences.

Not all Chinese people are hungry consumers from Westernised cities. This is one of the clichés that Catherine Vuylsteke carefully debunks in her book China: The Land of Superlatives. China: the land of superlatives. The driving force of the twenty-first century. The Yellow Giant. The hyperbole of transformation. In this pep talk, Vuylsteke no longer recognises the China that has become her second home over the past twenty years. This is why she set out to find the truth behind the rhetoric. Her journey takes her to places and people who reveal a surprising side to China.

Between October 2005 and May 2006, Dieter Telemans, Tim Dirven and Jimmy Kets took turns to accompany Catherine Vuylsteke on her reporting trips.
