José Fernandes is a Portuguese photographer who lives in New Orleans.

José Fernandes was born in Angola in 1959 and grew up in Portugal. After studying economics in New Orleans, where he lived for 28 years, he worked as a stockbroker and a door-to-door furniture salesman. He took up photography in the 1990s, and after experiencing the effects of Hurricane Katrina first-hand, he began to focus more on social issues. His work has been published in international magazines such as DAMn°, Tribe, Travel and Leisure, and Condé Nast, and he has collaborated on several books, including Lusobelgae. He is currently working on a book about Cova da Moura, Portugal's first clandestine African neighbourhood, where he lived for two months.

Lusobelgae. A documentary on the Portuguese of Brussels

BRUSSELS – For the first time, Lusobelgae sheds light on the Portuguese community in Brussels, from the first wave of migration in the 1960s (political and economic refugees fleeing the Salazar regime) to the present day. The community is divided between traditional labour migration and EU officials, and there is a young generation who want to break free from the closed community and engage with wider society.
