CAPE TOWN - While in Belgium almost eighty per cent of the population has been vaccinated, in Africa the percentage is still pitifully low.

In South Africa, only one third of the population has received a Covid-19 vaccine. South Africans have other priorities than getting a vaccine and distrust the government. Yet increasing the vaccination rate is of vital importance, say specialists. In a three-part series, Janine Meijer analyses why the vaccination rate remains so low in South Africa, how Covid-19 has deepened the gap between rich and poor and increased intolerance among residents. Can an African variant of the Covid-19 vaccine change this?
