Media cafés originated from the VVOJ cafés that have been organized in Flanders and the Netherlands since 2003. Since 2010, deBuren, Journalismfund.eu (Pascal Decroos Fund), and the Flemish-Dutch Association of Investigative Journalists (VVOJ) have joined forces. Media cafés are held annually in Ghent and at various locations in the Netherlands.
