BRUSSELS/SANTIAGO - Every second, 4.3 babies are born worldwide. For a woman, childbirth is one of the most profound physical and emotional events in her life. But birth, like the female body an sich, remains understudied and under-researched.

“As long as the baby is healthy,” new mothers are often told. That leaves little room for the mother's experience, according to author Millie Hill, who, in her book Giving Birth Like A Feminist, advocates giving women more control over their childbirth.

How do you put the interests of both woman and child first? Sanne De Wilde and Zjos Vlaminck investigated the culture of childbirth in Belgium, Chile and the Netherlands.
